Basic Crisis Negotiation Techniques (C.N.T. 1)

The basic course is designed for new or limited experience negotiators to understand and develop the skills necessary to initiate and survive the negotiation process with a person dealing in crisis. The class will explain some to the history of crisis negotiations and differentiate between a “hostage situation” and “a person in crisis.” Participants will learn the techniques of applying Active Listening Skills and consider various communication methods while identifying psychological and emotional issues impacting the person in crisis.

Each student will receive copies of all lesson plan and training materials, research materials, handouts and scenario based exercises.

Recommended for: new Crisis Negotiation Team members, first-line Police Officers, Investigators, First-line and Middle Management as well as Command Staff.

Advanced Crisis Negotiation Techniques (C.N.T. 2)

The Advanced course is designed for experienced Crisis Negotiators to enhance their basic skills and consider advanced concepts to promote those skills. The class delves into the constructs of suicide and considers various techniques to allow negotiators to successfully intervene. Other advanced listening and communication skills such as empathetic listening and behavior change paradigms will be discussed. Team command, development, management and training will be discussed along with current liability issues and trends. An overview of specialized equipment, software and documentation techniques will be considered.

Each student will receive copies of all lesson plan and training materials, research materials, handouts and scenario based exercises.

Recommended for: experienced Crisis Negotiation Team members, Negotiation and Tactical Team Commanders as well as Incident Commanders.

 

Special issues in Crisis Negotiations (C.N.T. 3)

This course will address of specialized issues faced by experienced crisis negotiators such as: Technology driven issues of Negotiations via Text Message or Negotiations while the person in crisis is blogging to the general public. Negotiations with a patient dealing with Alzheimer’s or Dementia bring a new series of obstacles for the negotiator to overcome.

Recommended for: Experienced Crisis Negotiation Team members, Negotiation and Tactical Team Commanders as well as Incident Commanders.

C.N.T. for 1st Responders, Train-the-Trainer

This course is designed for experienced Crisis Negotiators tasked with the specific intent of training 1st Responders in the basics of negotiation techniques. The course presents a lesson plan, scenario based exercises, and Instructor Development techniques necessary for the presentation of training to those 1st Responders in their agencies.

Each student will receive copies of all lesson plans, Power-point presentations and training materials, along with any handouts and scenario based exercises.

Recommended for: Experienced Crisis Negotiation Team Members, Team Commanders and Trainers.

 

Crisis Negotiation Team Commanders Course

This course is designed to provide Crisis and Tactical Team Commanders with information, techniques and skills to lead a specialized team through a crisis negotiation incident with the greatest potential for success and reduced risk of liability and failure. Topics will include: Liability issues, identifying and assessing the best negotiator for the situation, training development, team development and organization, as well as leadership and management.

Each student will receive copies of all lesson plans, Power-point presentations and training materials, along with any handouts and scenario based exercises.

Recommended for: Experienced Crisis Negotiation Team Members, Negotiation Team and Incident Commanders.

 

Crisis Negotiation for Emergency Communicators/Dispatchers

The basic course is designed for emergency tele-communicators and dispatchers to understand and develop the skills necessary to engage and survive the negotiation process with a person in crisis. Participants will learn the techniques of applying Active Listening Skills and consider various communication methods while identifying psychological and emotional issues impacting the person in crisis.
